| Nyamwezi female figure, Tanzania 16.5" tall wood, pigment, beads I really love the movement in the carving of this particular figure with the upper torso and head turned slightly to the right. The pose with the arms behind the back, as seen in this figure, is often times a traditional gesture of sorrow or mourning in many African cultures according to the book "Gestures in African Art". |
